Cecil V. Smith, Sr. founded the agency in 1966. After several years of working for insurance companies and other insurance agencies he felt a strong desire to create an agency founded on the principles in which he believed. He always believed in personal and dependable service and wanted to create a "family business." His wife, Corinne Smith worked with him from day one doing client service work and bookkeeping. She remained active as a valuable member of the agency in the position of Secretary/Treasurer until her retirement in October of 1999.
In 1979 Cecil's son, Brad Smith, joined the agency which at that time was located in the Clark Tower. Feeling the need to be more accessible by our customers than a tower building location provided, the agency moved to 1000 S. Yates Road. This was a one story building that was easily accessible for our clients and the agency resided in that location for 18 years.
In 1982 another son, Kenny Smith, joined the agency. He worked in the agency until 1998 when he went to work for one of his clients in a computer related industry.
In 1990 another son, Stan Smith, joined the Agency after spending 6 years working for the USF&G Insurance Company as a casualty underwriter. Stan brought valuable insurance knowledge with him to the agency that has helped the agency develop all lines of personal business.
In 1992, Herb Davis, CPCU joined the agency. Herb is also a family member as a brother in law of Brad and Stan Smith. Herb's background in company underwriting for several different insurance companies coupled with his underwriting for a reinsurance company and extensive insurance education background has proved valuable to the growth of CSIA.
More space was eventually needed and in December of 1995 the agency moved to its current location in Germantown. Our goal was to maintain easy access for our clients by remaining in a one level street accessible building.
Brad, Stan and Herb have all been active in the community and in their trade association, the Independent Insurance Agents Association, serving on the local and state levels. Brad is slated to become President of the Insurors of Tennessee for the year 2006. Stan and Brad followed in Cecil’s footsteps by being very active in officiating football at the high school and college levels. Brad recently retired after 21 years as a Division I football official from Conference-USA and Stan officiated football many years in the Gulf South Conference. Herb is recognized for his excellent teaching of insurance courses at a local community college.
Brad, Stan and Herb became owners of the agency in Oct. of 1998 and Cecil Smith retired after 32 years of service to his clients. Brad Smith now serves as the president and the agency manager of Cecil Smith Insurance Agency, Inc. Stan Smith serves as Vice-President and manages the Personal Lines accounts. Herb Davis, CPCU is also a Vice-President managing the Commercial Lines accounts for CSIA. Brad’s wife, Cathy, has worked in the agency since 1981 and continues to oversee the accounting department for the agency. Stan’s wife Candi rejoined the agency after several years at home working in the commercial lines department.
